“Mr. Padre” Tony Gwynn, who tormented opposing pitchers from 1982 to 2001, is far and away the San Diego’s all-time leader in the wins above replacement statistic at 69.2 for his career. The eight-time NL batting champion was a 15-time All Star and five-time Gold Glove winner for the Padres.
Gwynn finished his two decades in MLB, all of which were with San Diego, with the 17th highest career batting average at .338 (Ty Cobb is No. 1 at .366). In 1994, he flirted with breaching the .400 threshold, but finished the season with a .394 average.
PADRES ALL-TIME ROSTER
Founded in 1969, the Padres are one of seven MLB teams to have never won a World Series, although they twice made it to the big show — in 1984, when they lost to the Tigers in five games, and 1998, when they were swept by the Yankees.
After Gwynn, the next biggest contributors on the Padres’ all-time roster by WAR are outfielder Dave Winfield (32.0), who played his first eight seasons in San Diego, reliever Tom Hoffman (26.0), and pitchers Jake Peavy (24.8), Andy Ashby (22.8) and Andy Benes (20.8).
