Babe Ruth headlines New York Yankees all-time roster by WAR

Perhaps no franchise in the history of sport has been more consistently revered — and feared — than the New York Yankees, and no player personifies that mystique quite like Babe Ruth.

The Sultan of Swat thrilled Yankees fans over the course of 15 seasons starting in 1920, and leads the team’s all-time roster with 142.7 wins above replacement. Combined with his WAR from his days with the Red Sox, his career total of 163.1 leads all of baseball.

Incredibly, the Yankees boast two other players north of the century mark in wins above replacement; first baseman Lou Gehrig (112.4) and outfielder Mickey Mantle (109.7).

While Aaron Judge and recently acquired Giancarlo Stanton have demonstrated talent that could one day land them in the Hall of Fame, their odds of cracking the Yankees all-time roster — with Ruth, Mantle and Joe DiMaggio currently occupying the outfield — are considerably slimmer.
