The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors continue to rack up NBA records in their pursuit of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls lofty mark of 72 wins in a season. They started the season by winning their first 24 games, which set a new standard of excellence among major professional sports in America, and they haven’t slowed down since.
With their 109-104 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night, the Warriors became the fastest team in NBA history to reach 63 wins. On Wednesday, they will have a chance to improve upon their record 50 home wins in a row when they return to Oracle Arena to host the Los Angeles Clippers.
While the game with Minnesota gets added to the win column, the outcome was in doubt late — the game was knotted at 101-101 with less than two minutes left in the 4th quarter. Draymond Green led a late surge to secure the victory and finished the game with 24 points.
As impressive as the Warriors win total is, Curry’s offensive contribution to the team — particularly in the realm of three pointers — is even more unprecedented.
Curry broke the previous record of 286 3-pointers, which he set last year, with 24 games remaining. Now with 12 games remaining, Curry has a total of 339 treys and still has an outside chance (pun intended) at breaching 400 for the season. For that to happen, he will have to bounce back quickly from his two-game shooting funk.
RUNNING WITH THE BULLS
The Warriors need to finish the season 10-2 or better in order to break Chicago’s 72 win total. The good news is nine of the games are at Oracle Arena where the Dubs are undefeated thus far. The bad news is they still have two games left with the Spurs, including one in San Antonio.
Further complicating the Warriors’ quest for 73 wins is Andre Iguodala’s recent ankle injury that is expected to keep him off the court for at least another week. Can Brandon Rush step up his game?
