The day before embarking on a quest for his sixth US Open title, Roger Federer took a selfie with Michael Jordan. As far as selfies go, the pic almost certainly set a record for combined championship titles represented by a basketball/tennis duo.

MICHAEL JORDAN’S SEVEN TITLES

Jordan hit the game-winning shot in the 1982 NCAA Championship game to lead North Carolina over Georgetown. In the NBA he twice guided the Bulls to three consecutive titles. He almost certainly would have picked up two more titles in the intervening years had he not opted to try his luck at professional baseball.

ROGER FEDERER’S EIGHTY TITLES

Federer picked up his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003 over Australia’s Mark Philippoussis. Over the next decade he won six more Wimbledon crowns and ten additional Grand Slam titles including five US Opens, four Australian and one French. In all he’s won a record 17 Grand Slams on way to claiming 80 career titles in singles play.

In all, discounting Federer’s doubles titles (of which there were eight), the selfie tweeted by the Swiss maestro represents a staggering 87 championships won. Unless Rafael Nadal and LeBron James pose together five or six years from now, it’s not a total likely to be surpassed.
