Serena Williams got off to a rough start in Perth, Australia at the Hopman Cup as she was blanked in the opening set by Italy’s Flavia Pennetta. But a mid-match jolt o’ joe turned her fortunes around.
After the coffee break, the newly caffeinated Williams went on to defeat Pennetta 0–6, 6–3, 6–0. Unfortunately for the top-ranked woman in the world, things didn’t play out as well in the doubles final and she wound up breaking her racquet in frustration.
AND VENUS WAS HER NAME
Meanwhile, across the Tasman Sea in Middle Earth (aka New Zealand), big sister Venus won her forty-sixth career title by downing Caroline Wozniacki 2–6, 6–3, 6–3 sans coffee break. The elder Williams was even treated to the spectacle of some well-trained ball boys.
